Hull on Sunday down to the Redknapps (bare bones)
Lost both strikers at the weekend (Jelavic and Hernandez) added to the already missing Robert Snodgrass, Mohamed Diame, Andy Robertson, Liam Rosenior, Gaston Ramirez and Sone Aluko

I do remember that week a (then) mate of mine told me that he was bored with how we were playing and went to watch Millwall that day instead. They drew 4-4 and afterwards he was trying to convince me that he'd had a better day out.

Yeah and we went 21 games unbeaten from the start didn't we? Shows that nothing's changed round here.

this game would have been perfect to start zarate and enner up top, the bring on carroll as an impact sub on 60.

Oddly enough I just watched Jim Rosenthal presenting the goals, and the commentator said the fans had been moaning about the style of play and lack of fluency in the team!

I agree with you about Nolan and have been vocal about that for the last 2 seasons. We (me included) think we could have more points without his selection and what he is doing with Nolan is very unprofessional IMHO but, in the overall scheme of things, he gets a lot of things right and has laid solid foundations.

He (BFS) is not the man to take us forward once we are established in the OS but for now is as good as any other option which would be more of a risk at this time (again IMHO).

If it weren't for the Nolan situation, I'm sure a lot more would agree with you Alf.

I've backed Sam all the way as I respect what he has done for the club, but now I'm at the stage where my logic is that surely he doesn't know what he's doing if he seriously thinks that Nolan should be starting every game for a team who has a chance of finishing in a very healthy position? I mean he literally doesn't bring anything to the party at all now he isn't even scoring his
10 goals a season quota.

And I don't agree with the masses who think we should drop Carroll every week, but it would be nice to see a different combination up front in some matches depending o nthe opposition.

These things are basic and you pick a team based on the oppositions players surely?

I have enjoyed most games this season aside from WBA at home and a couple of others but generally we have looked capable of scoring. I can remember better games in the past but also a lot more games I can remember when we were poor to embarassing. We generally nowadays look solid and committed and that for me is a big positive from Sam's tenure. I just try to leave out the emotional parts about BFS and the fact that he has his favourites. Some managers do and always will. We have improved and while that continues I will accept the trade offs. Its all about opinions though :-)

Sir Alf, you are not alone. There are two or three more I think.

Sadly i've enjoyed games when we have lost more, in the days when we at least tried to play attacking football.

Re: Hull on Sunday down to the Redknapps (bare bones)
I must be the exception but I do not want BFS out. I do think he is showing signs of nepotism with Nolan and I do think he has his favourites, should have given the Sakho and Valencia partnership another go and also given Zarate and Poyet more game time.

But he has improved the style of play for the most part and we are stronger as a squad and improved over last season (assuming we end up in a better league position).

I think we will end up at 7th or 8th hopefully and when I look back at when he (BFS) came in, we have come a long way and with S & Gs backing the management team (thats all of them) seem to be doing the right thing compared to most clubs outside the top 6 richest ones.

I do not like BFS's lack of humility and the fact he is never willing, let alone, admits when he is wrong. I do not, like I say, like his selections of players and subs and tactics some times but am trying to takean overarching view taking everything into consideration. At this time the disruption of a new manager seems more risky and who is to say they will do any better? Stick with what we have for now and for the next 2 years until we are into the OS and that, for me, seems the best time for looking at whether we need to make a change.

Of course, if BFS manages to take us into free fall better now and then, well all bets are then off but on balance and with the reservations mentioned, he seems a decent choice for the next season or two.

Maybe another and much shorter way to express all this is that my expectations are more modest after seeing about 7 or 8 decent seasons out of 50 odd and I count this as a decent one so am grateful for it :-)

Fuck me thanks for reminding me about last seasons game terry.

Dominated by a team with 10 men who still played more forwards than we did.

2 shots all night were the penalty and the own goal, which is basically classic Allardyce the fat fuck.

Depressing night that was.

I seem to remember Villa being down to the bare bones when we played them a few weeks ago and we couldn't get the round thing between their goal posts.
As long as the fat man doesn't repeat his cupping the ear act I'll probably survive whatever the score on Sunday.

I've been deciding whether to do West Ham this week in my Last Man Standing down my local. On paper we should smash them with this in mind but playing so negative again I'm just not sure.

Re: Hull on Sunday down to the Redknapps (bare bones)
I am sure that will have no effect on our approach - snatch a 1-0 lead and then defending that (unsuccessfully) for 45 mins +... concede and try desperately (and unsuccessfully) for a last gasp winner ...

Re: Hull on Sunday down to the Redknapps (bare bones)
Pottsy once scored a hat-trick for the stiffs.

That 7-1 is one of my favourite games ever. The team that Macari built properly expressing itself (albeit under Bonds). One of the windiest games too. I remember turning to my mate five minutes in and saying either Ludo or Pottsy would score in this. Ludo almost did as I remember. And yes, Potts did have a thunderbolt saved a few minutes before his shot trickled through Hesford's legs.

Funny how such a short period in our history (that season and the one before) gave us a spread of really iconic games - 5-0 Sunderland, 5-0 Sheff Utd, 2-1 Everton, 2-1 Wimbledon, the Derby league cup replays, 4-0 Wolves, 5-0 Derby...
